Billion Hearts Beating Foundation

Senior Care (Geriatric Care) is a key initiative by the Billion Hearts Beating Foundation aimed at transforming healthcare access for seniors residing in care homes across India. With a vision to ensure preventive healthcare, the project addresses critical healthcare gaps, focusing on medication support, health awareness, and mental well-being.

Senior Care (Geriatric Care) operates in 14 states, supporting 309 senior care homes and 24 underserved communities. The project has benefitted 3,68,340+ seniors annually through free medicines, health camps, and community engagement programs. Billion Hearts Beating Foundation has also partnered with Apollo Hospitals and other leading pharmaceutical organizations for seamless delivery of healthcare services.

 Key Beneficiaries:

– Over 309 senior care homes across 14 states.

– Seniors in underserved communities with limited access to healthcare.

Through a Personalized Prescription Model, seniors receive tailored medication plans to effectively manage chronic and non-communicable diseases. Additionally, health awareness camps address key health concerns, including diabetes, hypertension, and nutrition. 300+ such health camps have been conducted in 2024 alone. The Weekend Warrior Program, a volunteer-driven initiative, has mobilized over 10,000 volunteers to provide emotional support, social engagement, and mental well-being interventions for seniors. Furthermore, caregivers have been trained in capacity-building programs, ensuring effective medication storage and administration.

Before the implementation of the Senior Care initiative, many senior care homes across India faced significant challenges in providing adequate healthcare. The lack of access to essential medications and preventive healthcare measures resulted in high rates of chronic illnesses and preventable deaths among residents. Additionally, there was limited awareness about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and insufficient mental health support, leading to a decline in the overall quality of life for seniors.

Since the launch of the Senior Care initiative, the healthcare landscape for seniors in care homes has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Senior Care initiative has benefitted 3,68,340+ seniors annually by providing free essential medications tailored to individual needs. The project also conducted over 300 health camps in 2024, offering screenings and consultations for chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. A significant reduction in the prevalence of chronic illnesses and preventable deaths is witnessed in health surveys post the initiative. It has enhanced awareness and management of NCDs through targeted educational programs for seniors and caregivers. Engaged 10,000+ volunteers through the “Weekend Warrior” program to provide mental health and emotional support. With an annual project budget of INR 64.78 million (FY 2023), the initiative has successfully transitioned to cost-efficient models, including the adoption of generic medicines, ensuring long-term sustainability. Looking ahead, the program aims to expand to over 350 care homes, integrate advanced healthcare technologies, and fulfill over 100,000 medicine orders annually, while continuing to engage 500+ volunteers every year.

The initiative has redefined geriatric healthcare by bridging critical gaps in medication access, preventive care, and mental well-being for seniors across India, and remains steadfast in its mission to provide holistic, dignified, and inclusive healthcare for India’s aging population, fostering a future where every senior receives the care and support they deserve.
