In the annals of agricultural reform and rural development in Andhra Pradesh, one name shines brightly – Mr. Vepuri Shadrak Dharmaja. His narrative is not just a tale of professional accomplishments but a saga of tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to the welfare of farmers.
For over three decades, he has been an integral part of the Department of Horticulture, Government of Andhra Pradesh. His journey began in 1990, and since then, he has traversed through various cadres, emerging as the Deputy Director of Horticulture under the MIDH Project.
One of his earliest endeavors was the encouragement of crop diversification, particularly in the tribal areas of YSR Kadapa District. By promoting the cultivation of high-income crops like Tissue Culture Bananas, he catalyzed a remarkable transformation in the socio-economic landscape, leading to a threefold increase in the income of tribal farmers.
During his tenure as Project Director in Chittoor, he spearheaded the widespread adoption of micro-irrigation techniques, covering over 30,000 hectares. His initiatives propelled the district to the forefront, earning it the distinction of being the foremost in implementing drip irrigation in India.
A watershed moment in his career came with the inception of the PPP Banana Value-Chain Project, a pioneering effort in fruit-care activities. Collaborating with exporting companies like INI-Farms and Desai Fruits, he facilitated the marketing and export of bananas to Middle Eastern countries. This initiative not only enhanced productivity and quality but also ushered in additional income for farmers, effectively stabilizing prices in the market.
Undeterred by challenges, he embarked on the Chilli-Value Chain Development Project in association with ITC, covering 50,000 acres. By leveraging digital services for capacity building and real-time assistance, he facilitated a 15% increase in productivity and income for thousands of farmers, while ensuring food-safe production for exports.
His efforts extended beyond conventional agriculture as he championed the modal FPO concept in bee-keeping projects, empowering self-help groups and marketing honey under a distinctive brand name.
Establishing Centers of Excellence for Flowers and Vegetables, he revolutionized seedling distribution, resulting in a 30% surge in productivity and income for farmers. Additionally, his advocacy for green energy led to the establishment of solar drying technology units and cold rooms, adding value to horticultural produce.
The promotion of intercropping cocoa in coconut and oil palm gardens, terrace gardening advisories, and numerous accolades including awards from the Vice President of India and the Governor of Mizoram underscore his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to the cause of agriculture.
In 2023, he was honored with the Glory of India Award, a testament to his exceptional contributions to the field. Indeed, Mr. Vepuri Shadrak Dharmaja’s journey exemplifies the triumph of vision, perseverance, and a steadfast dedication to the welfare of farmers, shaping a brighter, more prosperous future for generations to come.
